Elasticity (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications) 2003-02
by: J.R. Barber
Key Phrases: final stress field, complete stress field, polynomial tractions, Mechanics of Materials, New York, Von Mises
Book Description
This is a first year graduate textbook in Linear Elasticity. It is written with the practical engineering reader in mind, dependence on previous knowledge of Solid Mechanics, Continuum Mechanics or Mathematics being minimized. Most of the text should be readily intelligible to a reader with an undergraduate background of one or two courses in elementary Mechanics of Materials and a rudimentary knowledge of partial differentiation. Emphasis is placed on engineering applications of elasticity and examples are generally worked through to final expressions for the stress and displacement fields in order to explore the engineering consequences of the results.
The Topics covered were chosen with a view to modern research applications in Fracture Mechanics, Composite Materials, Tribology and Numerical Methods. Thus, significant attention is given to crack and contact problems, problems involving interfaces between dissimilar media, thermo elasticity, singular asymptotic stress fields and three-dimensional problems.
This second edition includes new chapters on antiplane stress systems, Saint-Venant torsion and bending and an expanded section on three-dimensional problems in spherical and cylindrical coordinate systems, including axisymmetric torsion of bars of non-uniform circular cross-section.
It also includes over 200 end-of-chapter problems, which are expressed wherever possible in the form they would arise in engineering - i.e. as a body of a given geometry subjected to prescribed loading - instead of inviting the student to 'verify' that a given candidate stress function is appropriate to the problem. Solution of these problems is considerably facilitated by the use of modern symbolic mathematical languages such as Maple® and Mathematica® and electronic files and hints on this method of solution can be accessed at the web site www.elasticity.org.

An Introduction to Differential Geometry with Applications to Elasticity
by Philippe G. Ciarlet
Review
From the reviews:
"This is a book about differential geometry and elasticity theory also published earlier as journal article. And, indeed it covers both subjects in a coextensive way that can not be found in any other book in the field. the list of references containing more than 120 items is representative enough and the interested reader should be able to find them among these." (Ivailo Mladenov, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1100 (2), 2007)
Book Description
This book is based on a series of lectures delivered over the years by the author at the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, at the University of Stuttgart, and at City University of Hong Kong. Its two-fold aim is to provide a thorough introduction to the basic theorems of differential geometry and to elasticity in curvilinear coordinates and shell theory.
To this end, the fundamental existence and uniqueness theorems are proved in great details. Such theorems include the fundamental theorem of surface theory, which asserts that the Gauss and Codazzi-Mainardi equations are sufficient for the existence of a surface with prescribed fundamental forms, as well as the corresponding rigidity theorem. Recent results, which have not yet appeared in book form are also included, such as the continuity of a surface as a function of its fundamental forms.
This book also provides a detailed description of the equations of nonlinear and linearized elasticity in curvilinear coordinates, together with a direct proof of the three-dimensional Korn inequality in curvilinear coordinates. The book also includes a detailed description of Koiter's equations for nonlinearly and linearly elastic shells, a complete analysis of the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of the solutions of Koiter's equations in the linear case.
The treatment is essentially self-contained and proofs are complete. In particular, no a priori knowledge of diferential geometry or elasticity theory or shell theory is assumed. Another highlight of this book is the focus on the interplay between "theoretical" and "applied" differential geometry. For instance, rather than being introduced in a formal way, covariant derivatives of a tensor field appear in a natural way in the course of the derivation of the basic boundary value problems of nonlinear elasticity in curvilinear coordinates and of shell theory.

Nonlinear Problems of Elasticity 1995-01 (Applied Mathematical Sciences)
by Stuart S. Antman
Key Phrases: aeolotropic materials, global constraint principle, planar buckling, Implicit-Function Theorem, Linear Impulse-Momentum Law, Global Bifurcation Theorem
Book Description
Within the past few decades, there has been an accelerating development of methods for studying nonlinear equations. Nonlinear analysis offers exciting prospects for certain specific areas of nonlinear problems with continuum mechanics. The objective of this book is to carry out such studies for problems in nonlinear elasticity. This book is directed toward scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who wish to see careful treatments of uncompromised problems. The author's aim is to retain the orientation toward fascinating problems that characterizes the best engineering texts on structural stability while retaining the precision of modern continuum mechanics and employing powerful methods of nonlinear analysis. The author's approach is to lay down a general theory for each kind of elastic body, carefully formulate specific problems, introduce the pertinent mathematical methods, and then conduct rigorous analyses of the problems.

Nonlinear Problems of Elasticity, 2005-09 (Applied Mathematical Sciences)
by Stuart Antman
Key Phrases: aeolotropic materials, global constraint principle, planar buckling, Implicit-Function Theorem, Linear Impulse-Momentum Law, Global Bifurcation Theorem
Review
From the reviews of the second edition:
"This second edition accounts for the developments since the first edition was published, and differs from the first edition in many points. The book has been reorganized and several parts have been added. The already impressive body of references has been further expanded. The reviewer highly recommends this book both to graduate students and to scholars interested in the theory of elasticity." (Massimo Lanza de Cristoforis, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2006 e)
"The second extended edition of the reviewed monograph gives a fundamental presentation of problems of nonlinear elasticity. Every chapter is equipped by instructive exercises, unsolved problems and exhaustive historical comments. The book could be very useful to applied mathematicians and engineers using in their works the elasticity theory and to specialists dealing with applications of differential equations and bifurcation theory." (Boris V. Loginov, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1098 (24), 2006)
Product Description
This second edition is an enlarged, completely updated, and extensively revised version of the authoritative first edition. It is devoted to the detailed study of illuminating specific problems of nonlinear elasticity, directed toward the scientist, engineer, and mathematician who wish to see careful treatments of precisely formulated problems. Special emphasis is placed on the role of nonlinear material response. The mathematical tools from nonlinear analysis are given self-contained presentations where they are needed. This book begins with chapters on (geometrically exact theories of) strings, rods, and shells, and on the applications of bifurcation theory and the calculus of variations to problems for these bodies. The book continues with chapters on tensors, three-dimensional continuum mechanics, three-dimensional elasticity, large-strain plasticity, general theories of rods and shells, and dynamical problems. Each chapter contains a wealth of interesting, challenging, and tractable exercises.
Reviews of the first edition:
``A scholarly work, it is uncompromising in its approach to model formulation, while achieving striking generality in the analysis of particular problems. It will undoubtedly become a standard research reference in elasticity but will be appreciated also by teachers of both solid mechanics and applied analysis for its clear derivation of equations and wealth of examples.'' --- J. M. Ball, (Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society), 1996.
``It is destined to become a standard reference in the field which belongs on the bookshelf of anyone working on the application of mathematics to continuum mechanics. For graduate students, it provides a fascinating introduction to an active field of mathematical research.'' --- M. Renardy, (SIAM Review), 1995.
``The monograph is a masterpiece for writing a modern theoretical treatise on a field of natural sciences. It is highly recommended to all scientists, engineers and mathematicians interested in a careful treatment of uncompromised nonlinear problems of elasticity, and it is a `must' for applied mathematicians working on such problems.'' --- L. v Wolfersdorf, (Zeitschrift fur Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik), 1995.

Structural Synthesis in Precision Elasticity (Mechanical Engineering
by Yakov M. Tseytlin (Author)
Key Phrases: pretwisted beam, helicoidal strip, circular notch hinge, Load Formulae
Book Description
Structural Synthesis in Precision Elasticity reflects the summary of theoretical and experimental studies whose conclusions are effective for optimized structural synthesis in precision elasticity, as well as demonstrate a large experience and options in the synthesis, production, application of precision elastic guides, mechanisms, correctors, transducers, instruments and machines. The main focus of this book is in the possible simplification of the corresponding analytical apparatus by using kinematical equivalents, matrix methods, appropriate contours, and function expansion with enough accurate minimal polynomials. This approach allows for substitution of some known unwieldy formulae and methods that are not convenient for digestible and tractable synthesis.
The book consists of two main parts:
- The elastic systems functional analysis and structural synthesis methods, including effective approximations and references to the history of their development
- The application and development of precision functional elastic systems at reference and operating conditions, including the observation of archives with effective synthesized structures and elements of nanotechnology.
Each part provides theoretical basics and a large variety of examples and recommendations. This book gives theoretical and practical tools to researchers, precision machines, instruments and miniature systems designers, engineers, metrologists, and engineering students.
Despite that this book is dedicated to the general problems of the structural synthesis in precision elasticity, most of the practical examples and applications are concerned with the measuring systems as the precision is their main goal.
The author intends to show close connection between the elastic precision structures developed during the 20th century and even before and the new elastic systems for atomic force microscopy and other recently created advanced structures in precision elasticity.

Mathematical Elasticity : Theory of Plates (Developments in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science)
by Arjen Sevenster
Key Phrases: linearly elastic clamped plate, variational problem satisfied, clamped shallow shell, Kirchhoff Love, Marguerre-von Kármán, Green-St Venant
M.S. Vogelius, Mathematical Reviews
1999 ...It should become a natural reference for any mathematician who would like to learn about the derivations (and limitations) of plate theories...Overall this is, in my opinion, a superb book, parts of which could easily form the textbook for a course on "the justification of plate theories", and all of which represents a very useful reference book on this subject.
Review
...It is an important work describing the justification of two-dimentional engineering theories of plates and shallow shells and should be purchased by university libraries.

Elasticity of Transversely Isotropic Materials (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications) (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications)
by: Haojiang Ding Weiqiu Chen L. Zhang
Key Phrases: isotropic hollow sphere, transversely isotropic problems, isotropic solid sphere,
Review
From the reviews:
"The authors main goal is to provide an introduction to the theory and applications of mechanics of transversely isotropic elastic materials. Additional notes and bibliography to chapters, special functions and nomenclature are included in three appendices. this book is written to meet the needs of modern topics on mechanics of transversely isotropic elastic solids. It seems to be a useful reference book on the subject. the book can be considered as an important contribution to the engineering literature." (Lokenath Debnath, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1101 (3), 2007)
Product Description
This book presents a comprehensive and systematic analysis of problems of transversely isotropic materials that have wide applications in civil, mechanical, aerospace, materials processing and manufacturing engineering. Various efficient methods based on three-dimensional elasticity are developed under a unified framework, including the displacement method, the stress method, and the state-space method. In particular, a three-dimensional general solution is derived to solve practical problems such as the infinite space, half-space, bimaterial space, layered medium, bodies of revolution, thermal stresses and three-dimensional contact. Exact and analytical solutions are also developed for static and dynamic problems of plates and shells, which may be used as the benchmarks for numerical or approximate analysis. Coupling effects of inner/outer fluids and surrounding elastic media on the free vibration of cylindrical and spherical shells are discussed in detail. New state-space formulations are established for the analysis of rectangular plates and spherical shells, from which two independent classes of vibrations can be easily clarified.
